ATI wurde 1963 von der damals nationalen Alitalia mit Sitz in Neapel gegründet. Ihre Aufgabe war es in erster Linie, durch eine niedrigere Kostenstruktur den inner-italienischen Flugverkehr insbesondere zu Zielen nach Süditalien rentabel zu machen. Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit Alitalia war in der Flottenpolitik, aber auch am Markenauftritt nicht zu übersehen. Nicht weniger als 38 MD-82 zählten in den 1980er Jahren zur Flotte.
