Auch nach über 60 Jahren seit seinem Erstflug hat die B-58 nichts an ihrer Eleganz verloren. Ziel war es, einen Nuklearbomber zu entwickeln, der die zweifache Schallgeschwindigkeit erreichen konnte. Heraus kam ein Delta-Flügler mit einer Wespentaille. Die Hauptlast, eine Atombombe, wurde in einem großen externen Tank „verpackt“. Zudem konnten vier taktische Nuklearbomben an den Rumpfseiten mitgeführt werden.
