Ab 1973 stellte die RhB die thyristorgesteuerten Ge 4/4 II 611-633 in Dienst. Mit einer Leistung von 2300 PS und einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 90 km/h avancierte sie bald zu der Universallokomotive auf allen Stammnetzstrecken. Die erste Lokserie 611-620 wurde in grüner, die zweite 1983/84 schon in roter Farbgebung abgeliefert.
