Die RF-4E ist die taktische Aufklärungsversion des berühmten zweisitzigen Mehrzweckjägers McDonnell Douglas Phantom II. Sie wurde speziell für den Export entwickelt und war die Kombination der Aufklärungssysteme der RF-4C mit der aerodynamischen Struktur und den verbesserten Triebwerken der F-4E. Die Luftwaffe erhielt die ersten Exemplare Anfang der 1970er Jahre und wurde neben Japan, Iran, Israel und Griechenland zu einem der wichtigsten Nutzer. Viele Komponenten und Aufklärungssysteme wurden auch in Deutschland produziert. Die RF-4E war in der Lage, "Allwetter"-Aufklärungseinsätze durchzuführen und konnte dank Infrarotsensoren, Zielsuchsystemen und Kameraausrüstung das Gelände sehr effektiv und genau kartieren. Einige Länder produzierten auch spezielle Versionen für besondere Einsatzzwecke.
