Da die RAF auf dem Luftwaffenstützpunkt Leuchars in Fife bereits Phantoms im Einsatz hatte, die ursprünglich für die Royal Navy bestimmt waren, übernahm sie mit dem Abzug der HMS Ark Royal im Jahr 1978 auch den Rest der Phantom-Flotte der Fleet Air Arm. Die Staffeln 43 und 111 nutzten die Phantom FG.1 zur Verteidigung des britischen Luftraums bis 1989, als sie beide auf den BAe Tornado F.3 umrüsteten.
