Mit einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 960 km/h war die in der Sowjetunion entwickelte TU-154 eine Zeitlang das schnellste Unterschall-Verkehrsflugzeug der Welt. Die modernisierte Variante TU-154M, die 1982 unter anderem auf Wunsch von LOT eingeführt wurde, verfügte über neue Triebwerke mit deutlich reduziertem Kraftstoffverbrauch. Insgesamt 14 der markanten Dreistrahler waren von 1985 bis 1993 bei der polnischen Fluggesellschaft im Einsatz.
