Trotz ihres inzwischen hohen Alters von über 20 Jahren, hält Lufthansa für die nächsten Jahre noch an ihren verbliebenen A340 der 300er Serie fest. Die Kombination aus hoher Zuverlässigkeit, geringer Größe und hoher Reichweite macht den Vierstrahler interessant für manche Langstrecken, für die andere, größere Flugzeuge in der Kranich-Flotte zu groß sind. 15 Exemplare stehen derzeit für Routen rund um den Globus im Einsatz, vier davon werben für die Star Alliance, der 1997 gegründeten Luftfahrtallianz, zu der inzwischen 26 Fluggesellschaften aus aller Welt zählen.
