Als rein Österreichische Konstruktion wurde die Reihe 1042 von 1963 bis 1977 in 257 Exemplaren gebaut. In den 1990er Jahren wurde ab der Seriennummer 1042.531 ‒ unter anderen Umbauten ‒ eine Wendezugsteuerung eingebaut und in Reihe 1142 umgezeichnet. Nicht nur vor Wendezügen sondern auch vor schweren Güterzügen in Mehrfachtraktion sind die 1142er bis heute unterwegs
