Die Ilyushin IL-62 war der erste Langstreckenjet aus sowjetischer Produktion. Ursprünglich 1967 eingeführt, gehörte CCCP-86700 zu der verbesserten IL-62M, die ab 1972 ausgeliefert wurden und als einziger Flugzeugtyp der Flotte diese Bemalungsvariante erhielt. Erst später in den 1970er Jahren wurde die Lackierung der riesigen Flotte vereinheitlicht.
