Nach den Erfahrungen mit dem Einsatz der frühen Produktionsvarianten der viermotorigen IL-62, die ab 1967 im Einsatz stand, entwickelte das Konstruktionsbüro Ilyushin eine modifizierte Version mit stärkeren, effizienteren und leiseren Triebwerken sowie zahlreichen Verbesserungen an der Struktur und der Avionik. 1971, vor 50 Jahren also, wurde die erste IL-62M der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. CCCP-86673 war das erste Exemplar und auch das erste Flugzeug dieser Version, dass der Welt auf der Pariser Luftfahrtausstellung in Le Bourget zur Schau gestellt wurde.
