Ab 1976 wurde diese TU-144 häufig für Erprobungsflüge eingesetzt, um Betrieb, Zuladung und Kerosinverbrauch auf Langstrecken zu testen, mit dem Ergebnis, dass Distanzen von über 6.000 Kilometern praktikabel waren. 1977 absolvierte sie erste Flüge auf der Strecke zwischen der sowjetischen Hauptstadt Moskau und der Provinzhauptstadt Chabarowsk im fernen Osten. Die Flüge in beide Richtungen blieben im Schnitt unter dreieinhalb Stunden für die 6.300 Kilometer lange Strecke.
