Der zweisitzige Allwetter-Überschall-Jagdbomber F-4 Phantom II, der von der amerikanischen Firma McDonnell Douglas entwickelt und in den 1960er Jahren in Dienst gestellt wurde, ist eines der bekanntesten und berühmtesten Flugzeuge in der Geschichte der militärischen Luftfahrt. Ursprünglich für die U.S. Navy entwickelt, wurde sie auch von der U.S. Air Force eingesetzt und hatte weltweit großen kommerziellen Erfolg. Die im Detail für die U.S. Air Force entwickelte "E"-Version der Phantom II zeichnete sich durch eine in der Nase positionierte M61 Vulcan-Kanone aus und konnte für Abfangeinsätze mit den Luft-Luft-Raketen AIM-9 Sidewinder und AIM-7 Sparrow bewaffnet werden. Die beiden leistungsstarken General Electric J-79 Triebwerke erlaubten es der Phantom II, eine Geschwindigkeit von 1.240 Knoten (ca. 2.300 km / h) zu erreichen. Mehrere Flugzeuge fliegen noch bei den Luftstreitkräften Griechenlands, der Türkei und Koreas und durchlaufen umfangreiche Modernisierungsprogramme.
