Von der Elektrolokomotive der Baureihe E 44 wurden von 1932 bis 1954 fast 200 Lokomotiven in Dienst gestellt. Die Leistung der 4-achsigen Drehgestell-Lokomotiven betrug rund 2.200 kW, dabei lag die Höchstgeschwindigkeit bei 90 km/h. Die Loks bewährten sich dabei sowohl vor Personenzügen als auch vor Güterzügen und wurden damit schnell zum „Mädchen für alles“. Einige Lokomotiven wurden mit einer Wendezugsteuerung ausgerüstet und somit im Vorortverkehr in Ballungsräumen eingesetzt.
