Zu den derzeit 20 Exemplaren der Boeing 737 Max 8, weitere sind bestellt, betreibt Turkish Airlines fünf Max 9-Flugzeuge mit gestrecktem Rumpf. Die türkische Fluggesellschaft hat sie für 169 Passagiere in zwei Klassen konfiguriert, verglichen mit 151 Passagieren in den kürzeren Max 8. Das Original zu der jetzt als Modell erscheinenden Max 9 mit der Kennung TC-LYB wurde als zweites Exemplar im Juni 2021 in die Flotte aufgenommen, benannt nach dem Bezirk Akçaabat an der Schwarzmeerküste.
